Foods that can help to make you fertile

Research has shown that up to a third of couples struggle to conceive - so what can people do to increase their fertility? Here is some advice on foods that can help to make you fertile

Eat organic
We don't yet know what the impact may be of untested combinations of pesticides and food additives on fertility. Play safe by choosing organic foods help to avoid toxicity and maximise nutrients.

Organic milk and grain products such as bread and pasta are not much more expensive than the alternatives. If eating meat, have organic free-range and stick to your budget by having it less often and having cheaper protein sources such as beans on the other days.

If your fruit and veg are not organic, wash them in a bowl of water with a tablespoon of vinegar as this helps to wash off the fat-based pesticides.

Go up to 8-a-day
Five handfuls of veg and three pieces of fruit a day in a variety of colours such as red, purple, orange and dark green help to top up antioxidant levels which may help protect the genetic material in the egg and sperm. They also give you plenty of fibre to help your digestive system clear out waste and toxins.

Phyto-estrogens for hormone balance
These plant-based hormone balancers help to prevent imbalances between oestrogen and progesterone which may lead to fertility problems and early miscarriage. Include a daily portion of fermented soya such as tempeh or miso, beans, peas, lentils and flax seeds to help keep a healthy hormonal balance.

Cut out the fertility hinderers
Two of the most important things to remove from your diet are alcohol and caffeine. Studies in men have shown that if these are drunk above a certain level (5 units of alcohol a week and 1 caffeinated drink a day), this could mean that it takes twice as long to fall pregnant. We don't know the effects on fertility in women but ideally both partners should cut these out.

Get prepared
It's also a good idea to reduce the foods and drinks that you can't eat during pregnancy before you fall pregnant so that you're fully prepared and don't need to worry if you had something early on which is better avoided.

These include certain cheeses, meats and gravy which have been kept warm along with unwashed salads as they pose a risk of food poisoning. Also avoid liver which may carry potentially harmful levels of vitamin A.

What's also useful is knowing that your monthly cycle is balanced and when you are ovulating so you can choose the best time to try. First Response ovulation test sticks are really helpful for this and give you a cople of days? notice of ovulation so you can make sure the sperm are ready and waiting for the egg release.

Essential fats
Small sized oily fish, hemp and flax seed oils and omega-3 eggs from seed-fed hens are rich in omega-3 fats. These fats support male and female fertility and hormonal balance and also help the baby's brain, nervous system and eyes to develop once pregnant.

Algae
Algae is a true super-food as it contains a vast array of nutrients, essential fats and amino acids in a totally natural and easy to absorb form. As it is at the bottom of the food chain it is also easy to grow with no potentially harmful toxicity. Have a daily algae shake such as ProGreens which also includes beneficial bacteria for digestive health and hormone balance and is safe in pregnancy.
